Our Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) set the standards of learning, development and care of children from birth to five. These standards ensure that children learn and develop to their individual potential and are kept healthy and safe. These standards must be followed by all early years providers for quality education and care. Here at Wembley Central Nursery School we use these standards to form the basis of various fun activities for the children within the nursery. A few examples of these are group reading and recall, arts and crafts, garden play, number re-call with addition and subtraction using colourful objects and individual/group play with numerous toys that spark their imagination. In addition we take regular trips to the library and we often have language, football and dance classes with qualified instructors.

Our friendly and professional staff have attended many training courses on the EYFS and have a comprehensive knowledge of this. Their training is reviewed and kept up to date as part of their continued professional development. Our staff have also been trained in-house to understand that every child is unique and every child learns and develops in different ways and at their own pace. Each child is assigned to their own key person who is responsible for welcoming and settling the child in the nursery, ensuring that the child’s learning and care is tailored to meet their individual needs and form relationship with the parents/carers to support continued development at home.

Settling in

At Wembley Central Nursery School we aim to support parents/carers to help their children settle quickly and easily by giving consideration to the individual needs and circumstances of every child and their families. Our aim is for children to feel safe, stimulated and happy in the nursery and to feel secure and comfortable with all staff. We also want parents/carers to have confidence in both their children's continued well-being and their role as active partners, with the child being able to benefit from what the nursery has to offer.

Our nursery will work in partnership with parents/carers to settle their child into the nursery environment by:
  • Allocating a key person to each child and their family, before they start to attend
  • Planning settling in visits and introductory sessions (lasting approximately 1-2 hours) over a one or two week period, dependent on individual needs, age and stage of development
  • Arranging home visits where necessary
  • Welcoming parents/carers to stay with their child during the first few weeks until the child feels settled and the parents/carers feel comfortable about leaving their child
  • Encouraging parents/carers, where appropriate, to separate themselves from their children for brief periods at first, gradually building up to longer absences
  • Respecting the circumstances of all families, including those who are unable to stay for long periods of time in the nursery and reassure them of their child’s progress towards settling in
Our staff are trained to recognise the different stages of attachment and use this knowledge to support children and families settling in to the nursery.
